Here are some tips for using a space heater safely:
Plug directly into a wall.
Plug the heater directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip, surge protector, or extension cord. Extension cords can overheat and cause a fire.
Keep it away from flammable materials.
Place the heater on a hard, level, nonflammable surface, and keep it at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn, like furniture, bedding, curtains, rugs, and clothing.
Don't leave it unattended.
Treat the heater like an open flame and never leave it on when you're not home.

Avoid certain areas.
Don't put the heater in a child's room, in high traffic areas, or in areas where flammable liquids or gases are being used or stored.
